10 mile trail run

So, today was my long run day. I was hoping to do 8-10, all depending on how my foot felt (It was my right that was hurting). So, I felt great! Well, my feet did. At about three miles in I had been draaaaagggggging, badly. I was hot as heck, tired and feeling like a slow friggin slug trying to run with a pound of salt on it's back. Then I realized that...I still had my jacket on! I hit a hard hill and was going slow anyway, so I took off my jacket and felt much better within about a half mile. The hills along this section are much harder than I remembered. Some of them I had to fast walk up, some I slugged my way through. I was able to make it to the 5 mile out point in about 53 minutes. On the way back I started feeling better and better. I finished the second half in 51 minutes! My last two miles were the fastest 2 miles of my 10 mile run!

Now to my feet. The right was fine, but the left was a bit sore while running, but not anything major like it was back in December to February. Well, now it's worse than it was when I was running. It's hurting right where the original pain was...so, I'm enjoying the speed I showed today (29 seconds faster per mile than the last I did this 10 mile run back in September), but with an ice pack on my foot, hoping I'll be able to run pain free real soon (uh, like, tomorrow???).

Relaxing Friday...

I love these days...Good day teaching 2nd, hurried home, quick dinner and then watching t-ball (my daughter plays- but my son lost his new glove...grrrrr...), now watching the Phils game with a cup of decaf hazelnut coffee...mmmmm...

Contemplating my run tomorrow. I'm going to hit the trails at Blue Marsh (love them!) and I'm hoping to do 8-10 miles for my long run this week. I wanted to be able to do 6 tomorrow and then 8-10 on Sunday, but I won't be able to get out Sunday, so I'm making tomorrow my long run. It'll be my 2nd run with my Camelback! I really liked having the pack and all that water but it'll take some getting use to the sloshing sound- I usually like the trails for the peace and sounds of nature and my feet tapping on the ground as I scurry like an animal running from a predator.

I'm a bit worried about my right foot. I did have some pain during the end of and after my long hard run on Wednesday and when I woke up Thursday, but I'm hoping the icing I've been doing wil take care of that. When I did have a lot of pain in both feet, the trails were usually more forgiving and the pain wasn't as bad. I was wanting to try to do the 8-10 miles in a 9 minute pace, but I am afraid of making the pain more severe and have a reoccurance of the swelling in my feet. I need to take it easy and be able to let go of wanting to do my long run if the pain does start during my run (especially since where ever I am at on the trail, I will have to turn around and go back) and keep my goal of running a half in late May, taking a shot at a sub 20 5k and a 50 K in October as my three main priorities.

Fridays like this are so nice. Knowing that my brother's house in Alabama is fine and that he and his family didn't have a tornado go through their town in PA despite warnings make this day even nicer. My heart goes out to the families who lost loved ones and who also lost their homes. I know no one is going to read this (yet) as I have 0 followers, but I like being able to keep this blog.

Get out this weekend and run- just run!

Off day, foot pain and coaching!!

Today is a planned day off. I had thought about just going for a quick, easy 2-3 mile run, but decided to take it as the planned off day because I woke up with some pain on the bottom of my right foot (I had a LOT of pain in my foot problems for about 2-3 months over the winter causing me to miss 2 races including the Disney Half).

That's the off and pain part of the title.

Coaching: Well, I convinced a friend to run the Hershey Half Marathon with me over the summer. He was a couch potato who always thought I was crazy when I went out to run and even crazier when I told him I signed up for a half marathon. Well, I finally got him to sign up to run it with me. Over the next two months he transformed himself into a distance runner. From a complete non runner in every sense of the word, he turned himself into a half marathon finisher. AND he didn't just finish, he ran the entire race with me and we finished in 2:06!

I enjoyed helping him through this process (and also having someone to run with). Over the past couple months, I have created a couple training plans for 3 other people- one for a 5k, one for a 10 miler and one for a 1/2 marathon! All three are sticking to their plans and one now wants to do a 1/2 Mary! I really liked creating these plans, but I want more. So, today, I finally saw that there was an RRCA (Road Runner Club of America) run coach certification program that was being run about 2 hours away, so I signed up!

I'm very excited about what this program might bring in my future and I can't wait to tackle this new challenge (but I have to wait until July...).

Now GET OUT AND RUN!!

The beginning...

This is my first post, it may also be my last post...or just my last post for anther month or so. Why am I doing this? Mostly to talk to myself. I love running. I love running short, fast runs or long slow runs. I have a speed goal of running a 5k in under 20 minutes. Originally, it was to run a 5k in under 22:23, but I did that- 21:02! So, I need a new speed goal for this year (just to help with the motivation). I also have a distance goal- to run my first Ultra! I already signed up, I just need to build up my long runs slowly. The race date is October 2nd and it's the Blues Cruise Ultra (http://www.bluescruiseultra.com/) in PA, a 50k trail run. It seems to be very well supported, and also very well run and enjoyable.

Goals are very important to me and for others as well. Goals give me something to shoot for, something to strive for to either make myself better as a person or just to motivate me to get off my ass. I try to help others get motivated to exercise and eat right as well- sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It just depends on the person and what they want. And what they are willing to do to get what they want.

I'm going to end this first post with a quote (I like quotes)...
"Dedication is doing what you don't want to do so you can do what you want to do"
