It's Monday

Today is week 2 of my Ultra training plan. This week, along with weeks 3 and 4, are modified because of missing long runs this past weekend. Just the long runs are modified, not the easy or moderate runs.

Week 2, Day 1: Rest day

This gives my heel another day to rest. I don't think it'll be an issue running as it wasn't a running injury and I haven't felt it when trotting around and playing with my kids.

I also had 3 pairs of trail running shoes come in from RunningWarehouse.com. I have been having trouble finding trail shoes in stores to try out, so I decided on ordering three from here hoping that one would fit. I ordered the La Sportiva Crosslite, Montrail Rogue Racer and the Adidas XT3.

The Adidas only got one shoe on, not even tied, before I decided they weren't right.

Next came the Montrail Rogue Racer (the lightest and coolest looking) and they felt great! Sockless. I have a couple pairs of high ankle socks that I wear for trail running. I put them on and tried the Rogue Racers again and knew right away they weren't right. A band the goes along the side and comes up over the pinky toe area pushes down on my toe with socks on (just that little bit of thickness was enough!). I took them off and put them back on a couple times to see and it was still bothersome. Going for 13-31 on the trails and that little bit of bothersomeness will destroy my toe.

Last were the LaSportiva Crosslite. These are the heaviest (2.7 oz heavier for each shoe than the Rogue Racer) but they felt as good as the Rogue Racer barefoot and even better with socks! They have a more aggressive lugging on the bottom as well as a thin fabric that goes over most of the laces to help keep the debris from the trails out.

It sounds like a lot to consider, but you need to make sure your shoes fit right from the start. There's no such thing as "breaking in" a good running shoe. Take your time and get it right. Go to running specific stores, too. They'll check out your running style, talk to them, tell them where you are in running and what you want to do and they will help you find the right shoe for you! Don't be afraid to say "nah, these don't work". In total I have tried on/ tried out 9 different trail shoes from 3 different places this year alone!!

So I'll be taking these puppies out this weekend for 12 and ~13. It's supposed to be 16, but I have 5k race that I'm doing on Sunday with the wife and some other people from around the neighborhood. So, I'll probably end up with about 10-11.5 after the warm-up and cool down are added in.

The rest of the week (after today) looks like this:
Tues: 4
Weds: 5
Thurs: 9
Fri: 0
Sat: 12
Sun: 16
Total: 46

What's on tap for you? Have any shoe issues? Are you shoe ADD like me?

  2. I've tried what seems like a bagillion shoes, my most recent pair, Brooks Adrenaline GTS 11, were recommended by my local running store. I've never run in a support shoe and it was awkward to get used to it, they feel pretty good now but I still oooh and ahhh at shoes all the time, such a junkie I am, but it kind of sucks that I discovered I need a wide shoe, limits me a lot on colors :(

  3. Stephanie: Well, I have to run in them still. Around the house is one thing, we'll see how they hold up for 12 and 16 this weekend! I seem to have better luck with road shoes. I've had two different ones in the past year- Kinvara's and Green Silence. The GS is being discontinued and they'll be coming out with a sweet looking replacement. My local running store said they felt great!

Irene- I'm a shoe junkie, too! I just found out that the trail shoes I loved the most (but my feet swell too much in the heat for them- not wide enough) the MT101's will be coming out as the MT110's in January of 2012 in EE width! I'm hoping not a whole lot has changed in them and I can't wait to try them!!!
